What Does a Webflow Agency Do? When to Hire One and What to Expect
The short answer
A Webflow agency plans, designs, builds and launches websites on Webflow, the visual website platform with a CMS and hosting built in. A good one covers the whole path: site structure, design, a clean build your marketing team can edit, CMS setup, SEO and redirects, and training at handover. Hire a Webflow agency when the site has to ship on a fixed date, carry a new brand or replace an old platform. A freelancer suits small, well-defined jobs, and an in-house team makes sense once you are shipping new pages every week.
What a Webflow agency actually does
Webflow handles hosting, security updates and publishing, so an agency spends its time on the parts that decide whether the site works: structure, design, build quality and handover. A full engagement usually covers:
- Discovery and sitemap. Goals, audiences, the pages you need and how visitors move between them.
- Content structure and copy. Some agencies write copy, others shape what you give them. Either way, someone has to own the words before design starts.
- Design. Usually in Figma: a homepage direction first, then key templates and a small design system of type, colour, spacing and components.
- Webflow development. Turning the design into reusable components and a consistent class system. Many builders follow a documented convention such as Finsweet's Client-First, so anyone can pick the project up later.
- CMS setup. Collections for the blog, case studies, careers, integrations or changelog, with templates that look right however long the content is.
- Interactions and motion. Scroll effects, hover states and product animations, built so they don't slow the page down.
- SEO and migration. Titles, meta descriptions, Open Graph images, sitemaps, schema, and 301 redirects from your old URLs.
- Launch. Domain connection, final QA across devices and browsers, analytics checks and publishing.
- Training and handover. Showing your team how to edit pages and publish CMS items in Webflow's Edit mode without breaking the layout.
When to hire a Webflow agency
The real choice is between an agency, a freelancer and an in-house designer or developer. We cover this in more depth in agency vs freelancer vs in-house, but here is the short version for Webflow.
Hire an agency when
- The site is tied to a date: a fundraise, a product launch or a rebrand.
- You need several skills at once: brand, design, copy, Webflow build, motion.
- You are moving from another platform and need content migrated and redirects mapped.
- Nobody on your team has time to manage the project day to day.
A freelancer is enough when
- The design is already done and you need a clean Webflow build.
- You need a handful of new pages or a CMS template on an existing site.
- The scope is small and you can review the work yourself.
Build in-house when
- You publish new landing pages, experiments or campaigns every week.
- The site is a core growth channel and needs a permanent owner.
- You already have a solid design system and Webflow foundation to work from.
Many startups combine these: an agency for the redesign, then an in-house marketer or a retained freelancer for ongoing pages.
What a good engagement includes
Most of our website projects take 2 to 6 weeks, depending on page count, CMS complexity and how ready the content is. Whatever the length, a good engagement has these pieces in writing:
- A clear scope. The list of pages and CMS templates, what counts as a revision and who writes the copy.
- A named team. Who designs, who builds and who you talk to each week.
- Review points. Sitemap and wireframes, homepage design, remaining templates, staging site and pre-launch QA.
- Ownership. The Webflow site sits in your workspace and the site plan is billed to you, not to the agency.
- SEO and redirect plan. A redirect map for every changed URL and a list of what is checked before launch.
- Handover. A recorded walkthrough, short documentation of components and CMS fields, and a support window after launch.
For Adopt AI, we did the brand, website and Webflow build plus a product launch video for its $6M seed, and the site was featured on the Webflow Blog. That kind of project only works when brand, design and build sit with one team and one schedule.
Red flags
- The agency wants to own your Webflow site or hosting. You should be able to walk away with your site at any time.
- No real Webflow work to show. Ask for live sites, not just Dribbble shots, and click through them on your phone.
- Every class is named something like "div-block-47". Ask to see a past project's style panel. A messy build is hard for your team to edit.
- Nobody mentions redirects. If you are replacing an existing site and the proposal says nothing about URLs, expect lost traffic.
- Design and build handled by unnamed subcontractors. It can work, but you should know who is doing it.
- A fixed price before anyone has seen your content or sitemap. Either the scope is vague or the price will change.
How to find a Webflow agency
Webflow runs a Certified Partner programme and says it has over 1,200 certified partners, each vetted by its team. Its directory lets you filter by services, budget and location, or you can ask Webflow to match you. Directories are a starting point, not a shortlist, so look at live work and talk to past clients.

A quick checklist before you sign
- You have seen at least three live Webflow sites the team built.
- The proposal lists pages, CMS collections and revision rounds.
- It says who writes copy and when it is due.
- The site will live in your Webflow workspace.
- Redirects, SEO setup and analytics checks are in scope.
- There is a training session and a support window after launch.
- You know who your day-to-day contact is.
FAQ
Does a Webflow agency host my website?
Webflow hosts it. The agency sets it up, but the site plan should be in your account so you control billing and access.
How long does a Webflow agency take to build a site?
For most startup marketing sites, 2 to 6 weeks. Larger sites with many templates, localisation or a big content migration take longer.
Can we edit the site ourselves after launch?
Yes, if it is built well. Your team should be able to edit text, swap images and publish CMS items without a developer.
Do Webflow agencies also do branding?
Some do. If you need a new identity too, it helps to have one team do both so the site and brand launch together.
