B2B Branding: What Makes It Different and How to Get It Right
The short answer
B2B branding is the work of making a business-to-business company easy to understand, trust and remember for everyone involved in a purchase. It differs from consumer branding in three ways: several people decide together, a wrong choice carries real career risk, and most buyers are not in the market when they first meet you. A strong B2B brand pairs a clear category story with a consistent identity that looks the same on the website, in the product, in sales materials and at events.
Why B2B branding is different
You are selling to a committee
Gartner says a typical buying group for a complex B2B solution involves six to 10 decision makers, and that buyers spend only 17% of their purchase time meeting potential suppliers. Most of the decision happens without you in the room, so the brand has to do the explaining: on your website, in a forwarded deck, in a product screenshot shared in a team channel.
Each person in that group cares about something different. The user wants a better tool. Finance wants a clear return. Security wants proof you won't add risk. Your brand has to speak to all of them without becoming vague.
Trust comes before delight
A business buyer puts their reputation on the line with every vendor they pick. Signals of maturity do much of the work: consistency, clear documentation, real customer logos, a security page and a website that looks maintained. Personality still helps, but it sits on top of trust, not in place of it.
Most buyers aren't buying yet
Research by the LinkedIn B2B Institute with Professor John Dawes of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, reported in Marketing Week, suggests only about 5% of B2B buyers are in the market at any given time. The other 95% will buy later. The brand's job is to be remembered when they do, which is why distinctive, consistent assets matter as much as campaigns.
Category is part of the brand
Buyers sort vendors into categories before they compare them. If they can't tell what you are, they can't shortlist you. Naming your category clearly, or deliberately creating a new one, is a branding decision as much as a marketing one.
A B2B branding process that works
- Research the buying group. Interview recent customers and lost deals. Note who was involved, what they compared you with and what nearly stopped the deal.
- Write the positioning. Target customer, competitive alternatives, what makes you different, the value that results and the category you compete in.
- Build a message hierarchy. One core message, then supporting points for each role in the committee, with proof for every claim.
- Design the identity. Logo, colour, type, iconography and a clear way of showing your product and data.
- Apply it to high-trust surfaces first. Website, product UI, sales deck, case studies, security and documentation pages.
- Equip the team. Guidelines, templates and a short briefing so sales and marketing use the brand the same way.
B2B branding examples worth studying
IBM: consistency over decades
IBM's eight-bar logo was created by Paul Rand in 1972, and IBM says it has stayed unchanged since. That consistency is a trust signal in itself. IBM's product design system, Carbon, is built on the IBM Design Language, so the brand carries through into its software.
Mailchimp: brand architecture for a broader offer
According to Collins, Mailchimp had added many products beyond email, but its credibility in email wasn't carrying across to them. Collins helped sort 35 solutions into five categories and, with Mailchimp's in-house brand team, created a new identity: logotype, logomark, a yellow-heavy palette, type, illustration and photography. It is a good example of B2B branding solving a commercial problem, cross-selling, as well as a visual one.
Workday: warmth in a serious category
Koto describes its 2024 refresh of Workday's brand as a way to capture the company's warm, human side. It redrew the sunrise logo, modernised the typography and added daylight-inspired gradients and office-inspired icons, aiming to stand apart from the cold look common in enterprise software.
Slack: simplifying for scale
Pentagram worked with Slack's in-house team to update the hashtag logo so it would work consistently at different sizes and in different contexts. Slack's own announcement noted the old logo used 11 colours. The update made the brand easier to apply across a growing business while keeping its playful personality.
At startup scale, we rebuilt the brand and website for Sprinto for its $20M Series B and the launch of Sprinto AI, with a launch film for the announcement.
Common B2B branding mistakes
- Writing for one buyer. Copy aimed only at end users loses the finance and security people who sign off.
- Generic visuals. Blue gradients and abstract network graphics make you look like every other vendor.
- Hiding the product. Show real, well-designed product UI. Buyers want to see what they are buying.
- Claims without proof. Pair every claim with a customer, a number or a certification.
- Three companies in one. If the sales deck, the website and the product look unrelated, trust drops.
Hiring a B2B branding agency
Look for a B2B branding agency that has worked with companies at your stage and with a similar sales motion, and that can show live brands rather than concepts. Ask how they will learn from your customers, who will do the work and what you will own at the end. Our guides to choosing a branding agency and the best SaaS branding agencies go deeper.
A B2B branding checklist
- Can each person in the buying group find their answer on your website in under a minute?
- Is your category clear in the homepage headline or subheading?
- Is there proof (logos, case studies, certifications) next to your main claims?
- Do your product screenshots look as good as your marketing?
- Are your colours, type and graphics distinctive enough to recognise without the logo?
- Do sales, marketing and product use the same templates and guidelines?
FAQ
What is B2B branding?
It is how a company that sells to other businesses defines and expresses who it is: positioning, messaging, visual identity, and how all of these show up across the buying journey.
Is B2B branding less creative than consumer branding?
No. Mailchimp, Workday and Slack all show B2B brands with real personality. The difference is that personality has to sit on top of clarity and trust.
How long does a B2B branding project take?
Our brand projects usually take 4 to 6 weeks. Companies with many products, or projects that include naming, take longer.
Should a B2B startup invest in brand or demand generation?
Both, in proportion. If only around 5% of buyers are in the market at once, a memorable brand is what gets you chosen by the rest when their time comes.
