How Much Does Branding Cost in India? What Drives the Budget
The short answer
Branding cost in India depends on scope far more than on who you hire. A logo on its own, an identity system, strategy plus identity plus guidelines, and a full system with motion and launch assets are four very different jobs, and quotes for each vary widely. There is no reliable published benchmark for branding fees in India, so the most useful thing you can do is decide which tier you need and brief every studio the same way.
The four scope tiers
Most branding quotes fall into one of these tiers. Knowing which one you are asking for is the first step to a sensible budget.
1. Logo only
A logo mark and wordmark, a primary colour or two, and export files. It suits very early companies testing an idea. The catch is that there is no system behind it, so every deck, social post and web page gets improvised and the brand drifts quickly.
2. Identity system
The logo plus a colour palette, typography, layout principles, iconography, image or illustration direction and a handful of real applications such as a deck cover, social templates and a website hero. Most seed-stage startups need at least this to look consistent in front of customers and investors.
3. Strategy, identity and guidelines
This adds discovery work, positioning, messaging and tone of voice before design starts, and documents everything in guidelines your team can use without the studio. It suits companies that are repositioning, entering new markets or preparing for a raise.
4. Full system with motion and launch assets
Everything above, plus logo animation, motion principles, product UI treatment, launch graphics and often a launch film and new website. It suits launches and rebrands tied to an announcement, where everything has to look like one company on the same day.
Why quotes vary so much
- Different ideas of "branding". One studio quotes a logo, another quotes a full system. Compare deliverables, not totals.
- Who does the work. Senior designers and strategists cost more than juniors, and some teams hand work down after the pitch.
- Directions and revision rounds. Three initial directions and unlimited rounds take more time than two directions and two rounds.
- Research depth. Founder interviews, customer calls and competitor audits add time, and usually improve the result.
- Number of applications. Every deck slide, template and banner designed is more hours.
- Timeline. A hard announcement date that is close means more people working at once.
Freelancer vs studio vs international agency
Freelancer
Usually the lowest cost and a good fit for a logo or a small identity. One person means limited capacity for strategy, motion or a website, and the work can stall if they get busy. Check that you receive editable source files and full ownership of the work.
Creative studio
A small team covering brand, web and motion, so the identity can carry straight into a website and launch assets without handovers. That is how we work at Studio Huncho. For SimpliSmart, an AI inference company that raised a $7M Series A led by Accel, we did the brand, website and motion. For Further AI, we delivered brand, website, motion and the Webflow build in the pre-raise window before its $25M Series A from a16z.
International agency
Large agencies such as Pentagram, with offices in London, New York, Austin and Berlin, or Koto, which lists clients including Instagram, Amazon and Microsoft, run large programmes for global brands with senior teams. Budgets and timelines reflect that. They are rarely the right fit for an early startup, but their work is a useful reference for the quality bar. We compare the three options in more depth in agency vs freelancer vs in-house designer.
Hidden costs to plan for
- Trademark filing. The official IP India fee for an e-filed trade mark application is ₹4,500 per mark per class for individuals, startups and small enterprises, and ₹9,000 for other applicants, according to the IP India fee schedule. Attorney fees and extra classes are on top.
- Font licences. Commercial typefaces are licensed by use. Foundries such as Klim sell separate desktop, web, app and advertising licences, so check what your chosen type needs.
- GST. Ask whether each quote includes GST, so you are comparing like with like.
- Photography and illustration. Custom shoots, stock licences and commissioned illustration are often outside the branding fee.
- Roll-out. Updating the website, product UI, sales deck, social profiles, email templates and any print takes time and often a separate budget.
- Domains and handles. If the name changes, buying the domain and social handles you want can cost money and time.
- Your team's time. Workshops, reviews and feedback rounds pull founders away from other work.
How to brief studios to get comparable quotes
Send every studio the same short brief. It should cover:
- Your stage, product, audience and the markets you sell into
- The scope tier you want, from the four above
- Whether the name is staying or changing
- The exact deliverables you expect, such as logo, palette, type, guidelines, deck template, social templates and motion
- How many initial directions and revision rounds you expect
- Whether website or launch video is in scope
- Your deadline and what it is tied to
- Who makes the final decision
- A request for line items, what is excluded, and whether GST is included
- Confirmation that you will own the final work and receive source files
FAQ
Is a logo enough for an early-stage startup?
For a pre-launch test, sometimes. Once you are selling or raising, a basic identity system usually pays off, because it stops every deck and page from looking different.
Why do international agencies quote so differently from Indian studios?
Team size, seniority, overheads and the scale of programmes they usually run all differ. Compare the scope and the team doing the work rather than the location.
How long does a branding project take?
Our brand projects usually take 4 to 6 weeks, longer with naming or a website. See our guide to how long a rebrand takes for a week-by-week view.
Should branding and the website be done together?
Usually, yes. A new brand on an old website looks unfinished, and running both together saves time. Our Branding & Brand Identity Design work often runs alongside the site build for that reason.
