How to Brand an AI Company: A Practical Guide to AI Brand Identity
The short answer
A strong AI brand identity makes an invisible product easy to picture. Start with one sentence that says what the product does and for whom. Pick a name you can own. Then build a visual idea from your domain, your output or your users, not from the AI defaults of purple gradients, glowing orbs, robots and sparkle icons. Treat the product UI as part of the brand, and use motion to show the agent at work.
Why branding for AI companies is harder
- The product is invisible. A model or agent works in the background. There is no box to photograph.
- Every category looks the same. When ten competitors use the same gradient and the same "AI-powered" line, buyers can't tell them apart.
- Trust comes first. Enterprise buyers worry about accuracy, data and security before features.
- The product changes fast. The brand has to survive new models, features and even new markets.
Step 1: Position before you design
Most weak AI brands are positioning problems in disguise. Before anyone opens a design file, agree on:
- The job. What work does the product do? "Underwriting intake", not "AI for insurance".
- The buyer. Who signs, and who uses it every day?
- The category word. Use a term buyers already search for: agent, copilot, notepad, platform.
- The proof. What can you show today: customers, outcomes, investors, a team with deep domain experience?
If you can't write the homepage headline from these answers, the visual identity won't fix it.
Step 2: Get the name right
- Own it. Check the domain, the main social handles and trademarks in every market you sell into before you fall in love with a name.
- Don't lean on "AI". Many AI startups add "AI" to the name or domain, and that's fine, but the word underneath has to stand on its own when every competitor does the same.
- Leave room to grow. A name tied to one feature or model gets awkward when the product expands.
- Rename early if you must. We took Refold AI from Cobalt to Refold, brand and website, in 45 days ahead of a raise. It is easier at seed than at Series B.
Step 3: Build a visual idea that isn't the AI default
The clichés to avoid
- Purple-to-blue gradients and glowing orbs
- Robots, humanoid heads and glowing brains
- Neural network node diagrams
- The sparkle icon as your logo or main symbol
- Stock photos of people pointing at holograms
None of these are wrong in a product UI. As the core of a brand, they make you look like everyone else.
Where better ideas come from
- Your output. For ElevenLabs, basement.studio built sound-wave visuals from Chladni patterns, plus a generator the team can use to make new imagery. The voice product became the visual language.
- Your users' culture. basement's Baseten rebrand used ASCII patterns as a nod to developer culture and a block system for scale. For Sookti AI, which builds agents for SAP work, we anchored the brand in ASCII design elements and shipped brand, site and launch materials in eight weeks.
- Your humanity. Ragged Edge's Granola rebrand rejected what it calls the "overly sanitised AI aesthetic" for a hand-drawn logo and a warmer type system. Koto's Copilot work for Microsoft puts people, filmed on 16mm, ahead of the product.
- A position you own. Mistral pairs "#1 in Sovereign AI" with pixel-style illustrations and bold blocks of orange and yellow that no other lab uses.
Step 4: Treat the product UI as part of the brand
For most B2B AI companies, the product screens are the most-seen brand asset. On the website, in decks and in launch films, the interface is what people remember.
- Design the agent's states. Thinking, working, waiting for approval, done, failed. These moments carry the brand more than the logo.
- Show work in context. Linear shows its agent picking up an issue and opening a draft pull request inside the product. That says more than any tagline.
- Share one system. Type, colour and components should be shared between the marketing site and the product, so screenshots and the brand feel like one thing.
Step 5: Write like a person, not a press release
- Say what it does: "Map fields across SAP and Salesforce", not "Unlock the power of AI".
- Drop the inflated verbs: revolutionise, supercharge, unleash.
- Be honest about where a human stays in the loop. Buyers trust that more than claims of full autonomy.
- Use numbers only when you can stand behind them.
Step 6: Use motion to show the invisible
Motion is how an AI brand explains itself. A short product film or UI animation can show an agent reading, deciding and acting in a way no static image can. Plan it with the brand, not after, so the launch video, website animations and social cut-downs share one look. Our guide to what makes a good SaaS launch film covers the structure.
An AI brand identity checklist
- A one-sentence description of the job the product does
- A name you can own across domain, handles and trademark
- One visual idea drawn from your output, users or position
- Type, colour and components shared by site and product
- Designed agent states and product visuals
- A voice guide with words you will and won't use
- A motion language for UI animation and launch films
- Templates for decks, social and the website, ready on launch day
FAQ
Should an AI company use AI imagery in its brand?
Sparingly. Generated or abstract imagery can work if it comes from your product, like ElevenLabs' sound-wave visuals. Generic AI visuals make you look like the rest of the category.
Does an AI startup need a full rebrand to stand out?
Not always. If the name and positioning still fit, a refresh may be enough. Our guide to brand refresh vs rebrand helps you decide.
How long does AI brand identity work take?
Our brand projects usually take 4 to 6 weeks. Naming and trademark checks add time.
Who should we hire for AI branding?
A team that has made a technical product easy to understand before. See how to choose a branding agency.
