Design for YC Startups: Brand and Website Around Demo Day and the Seed Raise

Design for YC Startups: Brand and Website Around Demo Day | Studio Huncho blog

The short answer

For Y Combinator startup branding, ship in two stages. Before Demo Day, get the essentials right: a clear one-line description, a simple but credible website with a real product visual, a clean wordmark and a deck in the same style. After Demo Day, once the seed round is moving and positioning has settled, invest in the full brand and a multi-page site. A good design agency for YC startups will plan around your batch dates and cut scope to hit them, rather than selling you everything at once.

We're not affiliated with Y Combinator. The YC details below come from YC's own website, and the advice comes from our work with YC-backed companies.

How the YC calendar shapes design work

YC is a three-month programme that now runs four times a year, in winter, spring, summer and autumn. YC says many founders describe the 11 weeks leading up to Demo Day as the most productive period of their lives. On Demo Day, the batch presents to an invite-only audience of roughly 1,500 investors and media, and companies are previewed on the YC Startup Directory and Launch YC.

That leaves design work with three constraints:

  • Little founder time. You are building product and talking to users. Design reviews have to be short and decisive.
  • Moving positioning. Many companies sharpen or change their idea during the batch. Heavy brand work too early can be wasted.
  • Fixed public moments. Launches, the directory listing and Demo Day are dates you can't move.

What investors check after Demo Day

Investors who hear a pitch usually look you up within minutes. In our experience, the website gets a quick, practical scan:

  • Can I tell what you do in one line? The same line you used on stage.
  • Is the product real? A screenshot, short video or demo, not an abstract illustration.
  • Who uses it? Logos, a pilot, a named design partner or a quote.
  • Who is building it? The founders and why they are the right team.
  • Does it feel like a company? A custom domain, a consistent look and no broken pages.

None of this needs a big brand. It needs clarity and care.

What to ship first

Before Demo Day: the essentials

  1. Positioning in one sentence. Agree on it first. Everything else depends on it.
  2. A wordmark and basic system. One typeface, a small colour palette, a simple logo you can live with for a year.
  3. A focused website. One strong page or a few: hero, product visual, how it works, proof, team, a demo or waitlist call to action.
  4. A deck template. The pitch deck in the same type and colours as the site.
  5. Launch assets. Product screenshots and a short product clip you can reuse for your launch post, social and investor follow-ups.

After Demo Day: the full brand

  • Full identity system with guidelines
  • Multi-page website with product, use case, security and customer pages
  • A launch film for the funding announcement
  • Templates for sales, hiring and social

Many founders time this to the seed announcement. Our guide on whether to rebrand before or after a fundraise covers the trade-offs.

A realistic timeline

  • Early batch: settle positioning and the one-line description. Keep the current site live.
  • Mid batch: wordmark, basic system and a focused website. Most of our websites take 2 to 6 weeks, so start at least six weeks before Demo Day.
  • Final weeks: deck template, product clips and launch assets.
  • After Demo Day: full brand, usually 4 to 6 weeks at our studio, plus a fuller site and a launch film, which take us 2 to 4 weeks.

Examples from YC-backed companies we've worked with

  • Coris, an AI merchant risk platform listed in YC's Summer 2022 batch and also backed by Lux Capital. We designed the website, built it in Webflow and added motion across the product story, so a risk buyer sees the platform and the proof in seconds.
  • Further AI, a YC-backed applied AI company for commercial insurance. We shipped brand, website, motion and the Webflow build in the pre-raise window, before its $25M Series A from a16z.
  • Nanonets, backed by YC and Accel, which has raised $42M. We designed and developed its website.

Choosing a design agency for YC startups

  • Do they plan around your dates? Ask what they would ship before Demo Day and what they would leave for later.
  • Can they work async? Short reviews, clear decisions and progress you can check between user calls.
  • Have they designed for technical products? Ask to see an AI or developer product they made easy to understand.
  • Will your team own the site? It should be in your Webflow or Framer account and editable by you.
  • Who does the work? Meet the designers, not only the person pitching.

FAQ

Do YC startups need a full brand before Demo Day?

Usually not. A clear line, a credible site with a real product visual and a matching deck matter more. The full brand can follow during or after the seed raise.

Should we rebrand if we pivot during the batch?

If the name or category no longer fits, yes, but keep it lean: a new wordmark, a focused site and a deck. Do the deeper brand work once the new direction has proof.

Can we use the YC logo on our website?

Check YC's current guidance before you do. Many companies simply write "Backed by Y Combinator" in text. Don't imply YC endorses your product.

Does YC recommend design agencies?

We don't know of any official list, and we're not affiliated with YC. Ask batchmates and alumni who designed sites you admire.

In a YC batch or raising your seed? Send us your Demo Day date and we'll tell you what we can ship before it. See our Website, Product & App Design and Branding & Brand Identity Design services.
